STAMP REQUIREMENTS · TX
Do you need an architect's stamp in Texas?
Texas does not require an architect for a private single-family home or duplex; the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners lists them as exempt from the Architectural Practice Act.
What the law says
Under Occupations Code §1051.606 and the board’s own guidance, private single-family dwellings and duplexes (along with farm and ranch buildings) can be designed by people who are not architects.
Where the exemption stops
- The exemption is for private single-family homes and duplexes; larger multifamily and public buildings follow other thresholds.
- A person who isn’t licensed may not use the word "architect" in any form when offering or doing the work.
When an engineer is still required
The architect exemption doesn’t remove engineering. Cities can require an engineer’s design for foundations, especially on expansive clay soils, and for framing beyond the prescriptive tables.
What this means if you're using a drafting service
A drafting service can prepare a permit set for a Texas house, addition or ADU without an architect. Ask your city whether it wants an engineered foundation before you order drawings.
ArchWorkPro drafts permit sets for $1 per square foot of drawn area with a $1,200 minimum, or $195 per sheet for new construction under 1,200 sq ft. We don't seal drawings. When your project needs an engineer or architect, you hire them directly and we draft to their direction. See what a permit set includes or permit drawings for owner-builders.
