Do you need an architect's stamp in Arizona?

Arizona does not require an architect or engineer to design, alter or add to a detached single-family home; A.R.S. §32-144 exempts non-registrants for that work.

What the law says

A.R.S. §32-144(A)(3) lets a person who is not registered design, alter or add to a detached single-family dwelling. Separate paragraphs cover small one- and two-story buildings under 3,000 sq ft.

Where the exemption stops

  • Detached single-family dwellings. Attached units in multifamily buildings are covered only for non-bearing interior walls, as determined by a registrant.
  • Trusses and calculations still carry an engineer’s seal where required; Maricopa County’s policy asks for sealed truss drawings and sealed plans for special conditions.

When an engineer is still required

Conventional framing usually passes without a seal. Engineered trusses, long spans and expansive-soil foundations bring an engineer in.

What this means if you're using a drafting service

A drafting service can prepare the full permit set for a detached Arizona house, ADU or addition. Truss drawings come sealed from the truss manufacturer’s engineer.

ArchWorkPro drafts permit sets for $1 per square foot of drawn area with a $1,200 minimum, or $195 per sheet for new construction under 1,200 sq ft. We don't seal drawings. When your project needs an engineer or architect, you hire them directly and we draft to their direction. See what a permit set includes or permit drawings for owner-builders.
